Patient Preparation

Some tests requires the patient to follow a specific set of instructions before collecting the sample.

Tests Preparation
Blood Sugar Do not eat or drink anything for eight (8) hours, except a few small sips of water if necessary.
Cancer Antigen (CA) 125 - for ovary Collection of blood sample must be ten (10) days before and after menstrual period.
Lipid Profile Do not eat or drink anything for ten (10) to twelve (12) hours, except a few small sips of water if necessary.
Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) - for prostate Three (3) days abstinence from sexual activity.
Routine Fecalysis
  • Place tissue on sloped area above the water level of the toilet bowl.
  • Allow the stool to drop on the tissue paper. Be careful not to contaminate stool with urine or water.
  • Use applicator stick (or popsicle sticks) and take a small sample (about the size of a 5-centavo coin) including blood and/or mucus if present.
  • Secure the lid properly. Wipe clean the specimen cups.
Stool for Occult Blood Avoid certain foods and medicine for three (3) days prior to the collection of stool.
  • Vitamin C supplements
  • Red meat
  • Broccoli, turnips, horseradish
  • Pain relievers (i.e. Aspirin, Ibuprofen)
Routine Urinalysis
  • For female patients if possible wash the external genital with soap/or water.
  • Let the first and last flow of the urine drop to the toilet bowl - catch only middle flow in the sample cup to minimize contamination.
  • Fill the specimen cup with urine.
  • Secure the lid properly. Wipe clean the specimen cups.
Urine Culture and Sensitivity
  • Wash hands thoroughly.
  • Wash penis or vulva using downward strokes. Urethral meatus and perineum must be washed. Each sponge/tissue must be discarded after one use.
